Recent research has shown that OCT scanning can be useful in identifying dementia in its early stages. The work, carried out in the UK and the Netherlands, found that people whose retina is thinner than normal are more likely to develop the condition. An OCT scan measures retinal thickness as a normal part of the test and in many cases compares the results against normal ranges.

Unfortunately the research only highlights the usefulness of the test but has not, as yet, come up with the answer of how to reduce the onset of dementia.
